If there’s one thing people seem to love, it’s reality shows about weight loss. Millions of viewers tune to shows like The Biggest Loser to watch contestants sweat, work, and diet their way to a healthier lifestyle. But what if the contestants weren’t humans at all? What if they were replaced with overweight dogs and the people who own them? Would you be interested? A recent casting call, spotted on Craigslist, appears to be hunting down pet owners with obese animals for just such a show. The post, which claims to be casting for an unnamed new reality show, specifically mentions animals that have difficulty running, playing, and even breathing. And while it may seem strange to want to highlight your pet’s ill health on national television, it appears as though pet owners from across the country are submitting their stories and hoping for a chance to do just that. Some pet owners have explained that a spot on the show might be the thing they need to finally get their pet’s health back under control. One veterinarian has even gone on record as submitting her pudgy Dachshund. But the real question is whether audiences will tune in to watch a group of overweight pets as their owners work to improve their health. The odds are good -- people do love watching animals on TV -- and the show might just raise some healthy diet and lifestyle awareness for pet owners who end up watching.
